What is an EMI?
EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment. It is the regular amount you pay each month to repay a loan over an agreed period. An EMI generally includes two parts: repayment of the principal amount you borrowed and interest charged on the outstanding loan balance.
EMI-based repayment is commonly used for home loans, car loans, personal loans and several other types of borrowing. Knowing the estimated EMI before taking a loan can help you understand whether the monthly repayment fits comfortably within your budget.
On a typical reducing-balance loan, the interest component is usually higher during the earlier part of the repayment period. As the outstanding principal reduces, the interest charged on that balance also generally reduces.
How does the EMI calculator work?
The ToolVerse EMI Calculator uses three main values: your loan amount, annual interest rate and loan tenure. It converts the annual interest rate into a monthly rate and estimates the fixed monthly payment using the standard reducing-balance EMI formula.
For example, if the annual interest rate is 9%, the calculator first converts it to a monthly rate of 9 ÷ 12 = 0.75% per month before applying the formula. The loan tenure is also converted into the total number of monthly instalments.
How to use the EMI Calculator

EMI calculation example
Suppose you are considering a loan of ₹10,00,000 at an annual interest rate of 8.5% for 5 years. The repayment period is 60 months.
Using a standard reducing-balance EMI calculation, the monthly repayment is approximately ₹20,500 per month. Over the full tenure, you would repay the original ₹10 lakh principal plus the interest charged during those 60 monthly payments.

What affects your loan EMI?
Your EMI is mainly affected by the amount borrowed, interest rate and repayment period. Changing any one of these values while keeping the others unchanged can change both your monthly payment and the overall cost of borrowing.
A higher principal generally results in a higher monthly EMI when the interest rate and tenure remain unchanged.
A higher interest rate increases the cost of borrowing and will generally increase the EMI for the same principal and tenure.
A longer tenure generally lowers the monthly EMI because repayment is spread over more months, but it can increase the total interest paid over the life of the loan.
Shorter tenure vs longer tenure
Choosing a loan tenure is not only about finding the lowest EMI. A longer repayment period can make the monthly payment easier to manage, while a shorter period can reduce the amount of time for which interest is charged.
