How exact age is calculated
Exact age is calculated using calendar years, months and days between the date of birth and the selected target date. The calculation counts the completed years first, then the completed months after those years, and finally the remaining days.
This is different from simply dividing elapsed days by 365. Calendar months can contain 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, while leap years contain an extra day. Using actual calendar dates therefore gives a more meaningful age result.
How to use the Age Calculator
The calculator can be used for a current age, historical age or future age. You only need a date of birth and the date on which you want the age to be measured.
Select the person's date of birth using the first date field.
Use today for current age, or select a past or future date for another point in time.
The result shows completed years, months and days between the two dates.
You can also view approximate total months, weeks, days, hours and next birthday details.
Age calculation example
Suppose a person was born on 15 March 2000 and you want to know their age on 20 August 2026.
The person has completed 26 full years by 15 March 2026. From 15 March to 15 August adds another 5 completed months, and from 15 August to 20 August adds another 5 days.
The calendar age would therefore be 26 years, 5 months and 5 days. This type of calculation is more accurate than estimating age from a rounded year count.
Calculate age on any date
The target date does not have to be today. You can choose a date in the past to calculate how old someone was on a particular day, or choose a future date to estimate how old they will be.
Check exact age on an upcoming birthday, event or important date.
Calculate age on a historical date when a form or record asks for age at that time.
Estimate age on an application, admission, registration or cutoff date.
Check how old a person will be on a future birthday, anniversary or planned event.
Exact age vs total days, weeks and months
Calendar age and elapsed-time totals describe the same period in different ways. A normal age result is usually expressed as years, months and days, while elapsed totals can be useful when you need another view of the same date range.
For example, two people who are both shown as 20 years old may not have lived exactly the same number of days if their birthdays fall on different dates or the date range includes different numbers of leap days.
Useful for long-term period comparisons, subscriptions, records or milestones.
Useful when a period is commonly measured in weeks rather than calendar months.
Represents the actual elapsed number of calendar days between the selected dates.
Provides an additional time-based estimate derived from the elapsed-day period.
Why leap years matter in age calculation
Most calendar years contain 365 days, but leap years contain 366 days because February has 29 days instead of 28. Over a long period, these additional days make a simple years × 365 calculation inaccurate.
This calculator works with actual calendar dates, so leap years and different month lengths are included when determining the elapsed date difference.
What about February 29 birthdays?
A person born on February 29 continues to age normally every year, even though February 29 only appears in leap years.
For calendar calculations, leap-year dates are handled according to the actual dates involved. However, the official or legal birthday used in a non-leap year can vary depending on the country, institution or rule being applied.
How the next birthday result can help
The next birthday section estimates the next occurrence of the person's birth month and day after the selected target date.
This can be useful for birthday planning or simply understanding how much time remains before the next age milestone. If the birth date is February 29, leap-year behaviour may require special handling depending on the intended use.
Common uses of an age calculator
Age calculators can be useful anywhere an exact age or date-based age comparison is needed. Some common uses include:
Estimate a child's age on an admission or academic cutoff date.
Check age on a specific application or eligibility date.
Calculate age for birthdays, anniversaries or historical events.
Determine age on a past date for documents, records or family history.
Calendar age vs official eligibility age
This calculator provides a calendar-based age difference. An organisation or government authority may use additional rules when deciding whether a person meets an age requirement.
For example, an examination, admission process, licence, benefit or legal requirement may define a specific cutoff date or special treatment for age. Always check the official rules when the result will be used for an important application or legal purpose.
This Age Calculator is intended for general calendar and date calculations. It provides a useful estimate of age between two selected dates but does not determine legal eligibility.
Official age rules can depend on local law, jurisdiction, time of birth, cutoff dates, institutional policies or the way a particular deadline is defined. Check the relevant official rules when age affects a legal, educational, employment or other important decision.
