Date Difference Calculator

Find the exact duration between any two dates in years, months and days, along with total months, weeks and elapsed days.

Compare Dates

Select two dates

Enter any two valid dates. The calculator will automatically use the earlier date as the start.

The calculation shows the absolute difference, so entering the later date first is okay.
Select the first date

The exact difference and total elapsed time will appear here once both dates are available.

What is a date difference?

Date difference is the elapsed calendar duration between two dates. It can be expressed as an exact combination of years, months and days, or as a total number of weeks or days.

Different formats are useful for different tasks. A project plan may be easier to read as months and days, while travel planning may need a simple total-day count.

How exact date difference is calculated

Exact date difference separates elapsed time into completed calendar years, then completed calendar months, and finally the remaining days.

This approach follows the actual calendar rather than assuming that every year or month has the same number of days.

How to use the Date Difference Calculator

Select any two valid dates and the calculator will measure the absolute calendar duration between them.

1. Choose first date

Select one end of the date range you want to compare.

2. Choose second date

Select the other date, or use the Today button to compare with the current date.

3. Review exact duration

See completed years, months and remaining days.

4. Check totals

Review total months, weeks and elapsed days for additional ways to understand the same period.

Date difference example

Suppose you compare 15 January 2024 with 20 March 2026.

From 15 January 2024 to 15 January 2026 is two complete years. From 15 January 2026 to 15 March 2026 adds two complete months, and from 15 March to 20 March adds another five days.

The exact calendar difference is therefore 2 years, 2 months and 5 days.

Why calendar difference and total days are different

Calendar years and months have variable lengths. February can contain 28 or 29 days, while other months contain 30 or 31 days.

That means one calendar month cannot always be converted into one fixed number of days. Exact years-months-days and total elapsed days describe the same time period in different ways.

Exact calendar difference vs total days

Exact calendar difference

Expresses the duration as completed years, months and remaining days.

Total days

Counts the actual number of elapsed calendar days between the two dates.

Total weeks

Converts the elapsed-day period into completed seven-day weeks.

Total months

Shows completed calendar months without turning leftover days into a fractional month.

Why leap years matter

Leap years contain February 29, giving them 366 days instead of 365. A date range that crosses one or more leap days can therefore contain more elapsed days than a simple years × 365 estimate.

This calculator uses real calendar dates, so leap years and February 29 are included automatically.

How date order is handled

This calculator reports the absolute duration between the two dates. If the first date entered is later than the second date, the calculation still compares the earlier date with the later date.

You can also use the Swap dates button when you want to reverse the fields visually.

Common uses for a Date Difference Calculator

Project duration

Compare a project start date and delivery date to see the calendar duration.

Travel planning

Find the number of days or weeks between departure and return dates.

Events and milestones

Measure time between anniversaries, events or other important calendar dates.

Work and records

Compare employment, subscription, service or historical record dates.

Inclusive vs exclusive date counting

A normal elapsed-date calculation measures the time between two dates. Some real-world rules instead count both the starting date and ending date as included days.

For example, an event organiser, court, government department or contract may define a period using its own inclusive or exclusive counting method. The calculator does not automatically apply those specialised rules.

Date differences for deadlines

The calculator can be useful for estimating the number of calendar days before a deadline, but formal deadlines may use additional rules.

Some deadlines exclude weekends or public holidays, begin counting from the following day, or move to the next working day when the deadline falls on a holiday.

Working days and calendar days are different

This tool calculates calendar duration. Calendar days include weekends and public holidays unless those dates happen to be outside the selected range.

A business-day or working-day calculation can produce a different result because it may exclude weekends and selected holidays.

Date difference and age calculation

Age calculation is a specialised type of date difference where the first date is normally a date of birth and the second date is the date on which age is being measured.

If you specifically want someone's age, use the ToolVerse Age Calculator because it also provides birthday-focused information.

Important

This Date Difference Calculator is intended for general calendar calculations and planning.

Contracts, courts, government filings, tax rules and other formal deadlines can use special rules concerning inclusive dates, weekends, public holidays, time zones or when a period legally begins. Verify important deadlines with the relevant official source or qualified professional.

Date difference calculator questions

Common questions about exact calendar duration, total days, leap years, date order and deadline counting.

How is the difference between two dates calculated?

The calculator compares the two calendar dates and determines completed years, remaining months and remaining days. It also calculates total elapsed days, completed weeks and other useful totals.

Can I enter the dates in either order?

Yes. The calculator reports the absolute difference between the two dates, so it can use the earlier date as the start even if the later date was entered first.

Does the calculator include leap years?

Yes. The calculation uses actual calendar dates, so leap years, February 29 and different month lengths are taken into account automatically.

Why are exact years, months and days different from total days?

Exact calendar difference separates the duration into completed years, completed months and remaining days. Total days simply counts the actual number of elapsed calendar days between the two dates.

Why is one month not always 30 days?

Calendar months have different lengths. February can contain 28 or 29 days, while other months contain 30 or 31 days, so a calendar month is not a fixed number of days.

Can I use this calculator for project or travel planning?

Yes. It can help estimate the duration between project dates, departure and return dates, events, milestones and many other everyday date ranges.

Can I use this for deadlines or legal date calculations?

You can use it for general planning, but legal, contractual, tax, court and government deadlines may have special counting rules, exclusions or jurisdiction-specific requirements. Important deadlines should be verified separately.

Does the calculator count both the start date and end date?

The tool calculates the elapsed difference between the selected dates. If a particular task requires inclusive counting of both dates, such as some legal or event rules, you may need to apply that rule separately.
